SMILE TRAIN

Moon Landing Exercise: Putting our communication to work.

You are a member of a space crew…

You were scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. However, due to mechanical difficulties, your own ship was forced to land at a spot 200 miles from the rendezvous point, but still on the lighted surface.

During re-entry and landing, much of the equipment aboard was damaged and, since survival depends on reaching the mother ship, the most critical items available must be chosen for the 200-mile trip.

15 items are listed as being intact and undamaged after landing.

Your Mission…

  1. Select a name for your crew

  2. In the 20 minutes provided before we all rejoin to the main session, discuss and rank the 15 items in terms of their importance for your crew, to allow you to reach the rendezvous point. Communicate back and forth and discuss your perspective and reasoning. You won’t have all the information you might like to have so you will have to work as a group to make the most informed decisions you can. Once you have reached some consensus, in the form below, place the number 1 by the most important item, the number 2 by the second most important, and so on through to number 15 for the least important.

  3. When you have all agreed, submit the form to the NASA experts. All the Smile Train small group crews will have their results compared to the NASA experts to see how you did. Good Luck!

  4. We will rejoin the main session and discuss the process of working as a team to communicate, prioritize, and come to a consensus.

YOUR Instructions…

Rank your salvaged items below. Select one representative from your group to fill out your ranking. Place the number 1 in the box under the most important, 2 by the second most important, and so on through to number 15 for the least important. Be sure to use each number 1-15 only once. When you are done, enter a team name, breakout room#, and click submit.
